For smart Zigbee luminaires, switches and sockets & switches to work reliably, the correct positioning of the devices and the gateway is crucial.

Although Zigbee is considered a robust wireless standard, unfavourable locations or certain materials can reduce the range and make connectors unstable. The gateway in particular plays a central role, as it establishes the connectors between the smart home system and the Zigbee network

Mesh network

A major advantage of Zigbee is the so-called mesh effect: all devices that are permanently supplied with power - for example luminaires or smart sockets - automatically transmit radio signals. The sun creates an intelligent network that expands with each additional device. The Gateway forms the centre and coordinates communication. The better the devices are distributed in the room, the more stable the network will be - even across several rooms or greater distances.

However, certain materials can significantly impair the wireless signal

Metal objects such as radiators, steel beams or electrical appliances block radio waves particularly strongly. Walls with metal parts and large glass surfaces such as windows, mirrors or glass doors can also interfere with the connectors. It is therefore advisable to position the Gateway and Zigbee gateway devices carefully and set up the mesh network sensibly.

Sun works optimally

Place the Gateway as freely and centrally aspossible in the living area
Distribute Zigbee devices evenly in the living area and outdoors
Use permanently powered devices specifically to expand and stabilise the mesh network

You should avoid this

Place Gateway or Zigbee gateway devices in metal or electrical cabinets
Place devices directly next to interfering electrical appliances such as microwaves
Position Gateway or Zigbee gateways behind or directly next to large glass surfaces (e.g. windows or display cabinets)

The ranges specified for wireless products are based on so-called free-field measurements. The values are determined under ideal conditions - i.e. without walls, furniture or other interfering influences. In everyday life, the actual range may therefore vary. It is significantly influenced by the local conditions, for example by wall structures, materials used or the placement of the devices. This standardised measurement method is the only way to meaningfully compare the ranges of different products.
